What role can life insurance play in your retirement plan? Most of us think of life insurance as protection against financial loss should we die prematurely. But when we reach retirement and the kids are all self-sufficient, do we still need life insurance? The answer is maybe. Here are some situations where life insurance may make sense for retirees or those close to retirement.

Provide a Source of Retirement Income

While life insurance is designed to protect against unexpected economic loss, cash value life insurance also may provide a source of income during retirement. Earnings on the cash value accumulate tax-deferred, and in some instances, cash-value distributions can be received income tax-free. However, loans used to access cash values from a life insurance policy will reduce the policy’s cash value and death benefit, could increase the chance that the policy will lapse, and might result in a tax liability if the policy terminates before the death of the insured.

Help Pay for Long-Term Care

Some cash value life insurance policies provide multiple sources of protection. Along with the death benefit and potential cash value, these policies may also provide a long-term care benefit. Often, these policies allow for a portion or all of the death benefit to be “accelerated” if used for the payment of qualifying medical and long-term care expenses.

Provide for a Dependent Family Member

Sometimes, even in retirement, there are family members who depend on you for financial and/or custodial support. Should you die unexpectedly, life insurance may help provide funds needed to support dependent family members with disabilities.

Replace Income for a Surviving Spouse

While Social Security provides retirement income for many of us, at the death of a spouse, his or her benefits end, reducing the total benefits available to the surviving spouse. Life insurance can be used to replace the loss of income for the surviving spouse.

Pay Off Debt

While past generations often retired with little or no debt, it is not uncommon for today’s retirees to leave the workforce while still carrying a mortgage, car loan, and credit card debt. Life insurance can provide the cash to pay off these debts, which is especially beneficial for a surviving spouse.

Help Cover Final Expenses

Unfortunately, the expense of dying is often overlooked or underestimated. Uninsured medical bills, funeral costs, debts, and estate administration costs can add up. Typically, these expenses are paid in a lump sum, which can reduce savings for surviving spouses and dependent family members. Proceeds from life insurance can be used to help pay for these final expenses, which may help preserve savings for other needs.

Leave a Legacy

For many approaching retirement, as well as for those already there, a primary concern is having enough money to live comfortably. While conserving savings and keeping track of spending in retirement are important, all too often retirees will forgo spending on themselves in order to fulfill a desire to leave a legacy. Having life insurance can help you feel freer to spend more in retirement because you know you’ll be leaving something behind for your loved ones.

Life insurance provides protection for your family’s financial future should you die during your working years. However, life insurance may provide other benefits that can be useful during your retirement. Whether life insurance should be part of your retirement plan is best determined based on your individual circumstances and goals. 5 Points for 5 Years Before You Retire

Retirement is an exciting prospect for many and choosing how to spend your retirement could likely be based on the planning you do today. For example, have you considered your plans for housing, healthcare, and travel expenses? If you are wondering how to get started, here are five points to consider within five years of your retirement.

  • Estimate your monthly income and allowances. The monthly amount could decline based on a lesser need for extras, but it could also quickly change based on your health or family circumstances, so estimating on the higher side could help. Also, consider readjusting or reallocating your portfolio and evaluating other income-producing and growth investments. And lastly, don’t forget to include any Social Security or Required Minimum Distributions.
  • Where will you live? Have you considered relocating to a state that doesn’t require as many taxes? Many retirees consider downsizing to lower expenses, or plan to move closer to family to help care for grandchildren or loved ones. Overall, there can be many benefits to living closer to family as you age.
  • Consider your debt and taxes. Retiring to a lower income tax bracket is possible. Considering a one-time tax hit, moving from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA could eventually produce a source of tax-free retirement income. But before you make any decisions, talk with a qualified tax professional to see if this move is right for you. Income and age restrictions may apply.
  • Healthcare costs. Will you apply and be eligible for Medicare and will this cover your present and future needs? It is possible you or a loved one may need long-term care at some point during retirement and this could affect your overall bottom line.
  • What will you do? How do you dream of spending your days? Will you take time to travel and see the world, or would you prefer to keep closer to home and pick up a new hobby? However you see your retirement, it’s important to make sure your finances can support your overall goals.

Planning for retirement involves setting goals and a defined strategy toward those goals. Whatever your plans are, make sure you have made all of the arrangements beforehand so you can live your retirement years as confidently as possible.

Common Retirement Investment Mistakes

Having enough money after you retire is a big concern today for Americans. In fact, only roughly one-in-four Americans feel very confident that they will have enough money to live comfortably when they retire, according to a recent survey.

The concern is certainly justified. After all, Americans are living longer lives than ever before, and the uncertainty of being able to maintain a lifestyle for 20, 30, or 40 years after you retire is understandable.

While there’s no single action that can increase your confidence if you’re nearing retirement age, there are several key investment mistakes that, if you avoid them, can help you maximize your retirement savings and perhaps give you the confidence to help you retire with less financial stress. These are the things you’ll want to avoid.

Mistake number one: Failing to maximize your contribution. If you can afford to do so, contributing the maximum amount to your employer-sponsored retirement plan will increase the chance that you’ll reach your investment goal. The earlier you start, the better. It will allow your investments the opportunity, along with any potential earnings to grow on a tax-deferred basis.

Mistake number two: Failing to develop a plan. Without a plan, it’s difficult to understand whether your savings will help support your living standard. As such, establish a plan early, laying out clear goals that incorporate the number of years until your planned retirement. This will help you create a practical investment plan for your goal. Without such a plan, it will be difficult to understand whether your savings will provide you with the living standard to which you’ve grown accustomed and for each year of your retirement.

Mistake number three: Adopting a short-term investment mindset. The stock market fluctuates a lot and in the short term, there’s a decent chance of price volatility. Therefore, selling off your holdings whenever the market drops is a sure way to incur losses that impact your long-term goals.

Mistake number four: Trying to be perfect. Trying to time your investment decisions on when the market will be at its lowest or highest is risky business, and it can lead to missed opportunities. Invest your money with an eye toward the long term.

Mistake number five: Putting all of your financial eggs in one basket. Some investors make the mistake of investing in just one fund or asset type. This is risky business if the market swings and impacts that one holding. On the other hand, if you diversify your risk over a mix of assets, this can help control any potential losses during sharp market swings.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you increase the potential for investment success and reaching your retirement savings goal.

Saving Money Now to Help Plan Your Future Retirement

Retirement. It seems like a lifetime away, right? It’s probably something you plan to worry about when you’re a little closer to your retirement date as well. However, financial experts suggest that the best time to start planning is in your 20s when you typically start earning a steady paycheck.

Regardless of your retirement date, it’s never too early to start planning for your retirement. You may be asking, “Where is the best place to start?” and “How should I invest my money to maximize the returns I see at retirement?” Both of these are great questions that we will delve into on this post.

Set your goals.

This applies to 20-somethings, 30-somethings, and 40-somethings. How do you know what steps to take if you don’t know where you’re going?

Sit down and figure out your goals. Do you want to buy a house one day? How long do you need to rent and save money? What “bad debt” do you need to pay off now to help you in the long run? These answers may change as life circumstances change, but it’s helpful to know what your goals are and create a plan to achieve them before you set out on your savings adventure.

Take advantage of your employee benefits.

Does your company offer a retirement savings account? Many full-time employers will offer either a 401(k) or a SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees Individual Retirement Account). It’s important to understand what these accounts are, how they work, and whether or not it’s a viable option for you.

What’s the difference between a 401(k) and a SIMPLE IRA?

A 401(k) is an investment account you make contributions to out of each paycheck. If your employer matches your contribution up to a certain percentage, that’s free money going into your 401(k) in addition to the contributions you’re making.

A SIMPLE IRA is a tax-deferred employer-provided retirement plan. Like a 401(k), you make pre-tax contributions from your paycheck, and your employer can also elect to match your contributions up to a certain percentage. Unlike a ROTH IRA, when you reach retirement age and begin drawing from the SIMPLE IRA, you will pay taxes on the money you’ve saved.

Good debt vs. bad debt.

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as good debt. Debt to buy a home or to start a business is considered good debt as it can be used as collateral. To our 20-somethings, listen up! Consumer debt: credit cards, car loans, and student loans often come with high-interest rates, which may only hurt you as you get older. Educate yourself on interest rates before taking out one of these types of loans (especially for credit card usage).

No matter what age you are, the best thing you can do is to avoid buying things you can’t afford. But, if you have debt or need to go into debt for a major purchase, have a plan to get out of that debt promptly. Look for areas within your monthly budget where you can reduce spending and cut unnecessary costs.

Consolidating debt and refinancing loans are two great ways to save money on your monthly payments. Debt consolidation is typically used for unsecured debt and is especially effective for high-interest debt like credit cards, while refinancing a loan enables borrowers to “redo” an existing loan to get a lower monthly payment, different term length or a more convenient payment structure.

Both options are a great way of saving money each month. Ideally, you’d be able to measure the savings you’re seeing and put that toward your retirement planning. It might not sound like a lot of money, but even if you were able to save $50 a month, at the end of a year you’d have $600 to put toward your retirement.

Financial Questions Everyone Should Be Asking

Here are some important questions that will help you get to know your finances a little better, and plan ahead for your financial future.

1. Are you regularly surprised by running out of money?

It’s one thing for money to be tight, but if you are repeatedly coming up short on being able to pay your bills or by overdrafting your checking account, it is a sign that you are not in control of your budget. Step one is formulating a budget that lets you live within your means, and step two is putting controls in place to make sure you follow that budget.

2. Do you save up for big purchases or rely mostly on credit?

Borrowing may be necessary for major purchases like a house or a car. But if you find yourself making routine purchases on a credit card, you are making those items way more expensive than they need to be by adding interest to the cost. The more you can wait and save up to buy things, the more you will be able to afford.

3. Have you formulated a retirement savings plan?

People tend to assume that buying a house is the biggest financial decision they will ever make, but chances are you will need even more money to retire on than it costs to buy a house. It takes years of effort to build up enough of a nest egg, and that effort starts with figuring out how you are going to save that money.

4. Is your retirement savings on track?

It may be hard to feel a sense of urgency about something that may be 20 or 30 years in the future, but if you wait until retirement saving becomes urgent, you will have left it too late. Start holding yourself accountable now, so you won’t have to try playing catch up in the last few years of your career.

5. If you have investments, how well are they performing?

People tend to focus on the big winners and losers in their portfolios, but what matters more is how everything has performed in aggregate. Performance measurement should focus not just on how well you have done, but whether your investments have behaved appropriately for the prevailing market conditions.

6. What is your credit score?

Banks, insurance companies and even prospective employers are going to know this about you, so you should probably know your credit score yourself. Check your credit report for free annually by visiting annualcreditreport.com.

7. What could you do to improve your credit score?

If your credit score is less than perfect, it could cost you in the form of higher interest rates, or even limit your ability to get credit. Identify what you need to do to address any problems so your score will improve over time.

8. What would happen to your finances if you were out of work for 6 months?

It may seem tough to build up that big of a cushion, but the median duration of unemployment peaked at nearly 26 weeks in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Knowing how close to the edge a period of joblessness would put you, is a good test of your financial wellness.

Some of these are questions that people just neglect to ask. Others are questions they are afraid to ask, because they might not like the answers. However, it’s better to ask these questions when you have the time and opportunity to deal with them constructively and create a financial game plan for your future.
