What role can life insurance play in your retirement plan? Most of us think of life insurance as protection against financial loss should we die prematurely. But when we reach retirement and the kids are all self-sufficient, do we still need life insurance? The answer is maybe. Here are some situations where life insurance may make sense for retirees or those close to retirement.

Provide a Source of Retirement Income

While life insurance is designed to protect against unexpected economic loss, cash value life insurance also may provide a source of income during retirement. Earnings on the cash value accumulate tax-deferred, and in some instances, cash-value distributions can be received income tax-free. However, loans used to access cash values from a life insurance policy will reduce the policy’s cash value and death benefit, could increase the chance that the policy will lapse, and might result in a tax liability if the policy terminates before the death of the insured.

Help Pay for Long-Term Care

Some cash value life insurance policies provide multiple sources of protection. Along with the death benefit and potential cash value, these policies may also provide a long-term care benefit. Often, these policies allow for a portion or all of the death benefit to be “accelerated” if used for the payment of qualifying medical and long-term care expenses.

Provide for a Dependent Family Member

Sometimes, even in retirement, there are family members who depend on you for financial and/or custodial support. Should you die unexpectedly, life insurance may help provide funds needed to support dependent family members with disabilities.

Replace Income for a Surviving Spouse

While Social Security provides retirement income for many of us, at the death of a spouse, his or her benefits end, reducing the total benefits available to the surviving spouse. Life insurance can be used to replace the loss of income for the surviving spouse.

Pay Off Debt

While past generations often retired with little or no debt, it is not uncommon for today’s retirees to leave the workforce while still carrying a mortgage, car loan, and credit card debt. Life insurance can provide the cash to pay off these debts, which is especially beneficial for a surviving spouse.

Help Cover Final Expenses

Unfortunately, the expense of dying is often overlooked or underestimated. Uninsured medical bills, funeral costs, debts, and estate administration costs can add up. Typically, these expenses are paid in a lump sum, which can reduce savings for surviving spouses and dependent family members. Proceeds from life insurance can be used to help pay for these final expenses, which may help preserve savings for other needs.

Leave a Legacy

For many approaching retirement, as well as for those already there, a primary concern is having enough money to live comfortably. While conserving savings and keeping track of spending in retirement are important, all too often retirees will forgo spending on themselves in order to fulfill a desire to leave a legacy. Having life insurance can help you feel freer to spend more in retirement because you know you’ll be leaving something behind for your loved ones.

Life insurance provides protection for your family’s financial future should you die during your working years. However, life insurance may provide other benefits that can be useful during your retirement. Whether life insurance should be part of your retirement plan is best determined based on your individual circumstances and goals. Considerations When Purchasing Life Insurance

Discussing life insurance can be a sensitive topic — after all, talking about death is never comfortable. But life insurance is an important financial product, especially if you support others or have substantial assets that you wish to transfer to future generations.

Choosing a life insurance plan is anything but straightforward, though. There are many types of insurance and features for you to consider. Here’s a quick overview of the most popular types.

The most popular type is term insurance, which often is the least expensive. These policies are written for a specific period of time — one to 30 years, for instance. You can renew them once the term expires, but the price may increase. If you wish to lock in the premium, you’ll select what’s called a level term policy.

A declining balance term insurance policy is used to protect your mortgage principal, and its benefits are paid only if you die during the policy’s term, which aligns with your mortgage amortization. Once you pay off your mortgage, the policy expires and has no value – unless you choose to renew it.

Whole life features permanent protection with a savings element. You can lock in a premium rate, and part of the premium accrues a cash value. As the savings amount increases, you can even borrow up to 90% of the policy’s cash value tax-free.

Next is universal life, which is like whole life but potentially accrues higher savings. You can change the premium amount and withdraw cash, and even possibly change the face value of the policy. These can offer a guaranteed return on cash value, too.

A variable life policy generally features a fixed premium and a flexible cash value policy. In fact, you can invest the cash in a variety of investment types. However, keep in mind that the cash value and death benefit can fluctuate, based on the performance of your investments.

Finally, universal variable life is considered an “aggressive” policy. While similar to variable life, there is no guarantee beyond the original face value death benefit. As such, they are more common with wealthy buyers who can withstand the risks.

Five Budgeting Tips You Can Live By

It’s hard to make budgeting decisions. It can be difficult to keep an eye on your short-term and long-term financial goals when you’re busy with everyday life. But putting together and following a spending plan can work wonders on your finances. Here are five tips you can use starting today.

1. Budget until there’s nothing left.

If you love spreadsheets, zero-sum budgeting might be the right move for you. It’s budgeting so every single cent is accounted for.

Try creating buckets for specific expenses — housing, transportation, food, and entertainment. After assigning amounts to these costs, stash what’s left over in savings.

When you sit down to put together your monthly budget, you can make categories for your big expenses and then create line items for smaller costs. Smaller expenses would include activities such as eating out or shopping.

The goal is to stay on top of your money from the beginning to the end of the month. Then repeat.

2. Get your loved ones involved.

Money management is a tough subject for most couples. However, avoiding money talks causes bigger issues that go beyond banking. That’s why you may want to work with your partner to decide on monthly spending — as a team. Discuss your short-term and long-term financial goals as a couple. Look over what you’ve got in your account(s) and go from there. But don’t forget about your individual needs. Both of you may also want to have cash for items or activities that bring you happiness. And if either of you is a big spender, have an honest talk about what you might be able to realistically cut back on.

3. Take advantage of technology.

Do you like using mobile apps? There are some great ones that exist for tracking your spending. Online banking apps also help you with automatic bill pay and lots of other features. You can view your cash in and cash out with ease and really get a handle on what money you’re spending. We’re all busy and any way technology can help is a plus. Of course, if you’re more comfortable keeping track of your expenses with pen and paper, that works too.

4. Give yourself time to adjust.

People who embrace budgeting for the first time often struggle. While getting over this is key to success, you shouldn’t expect to become a money pro right out of the gate. Understand that you’ll need time to adjust and that small setbacks are bound to happen when following a budget. Also, keep in mind that you might have to change your plan from time to time. An approach that worked last year might not work this year due to changes in your personal life or career. Don’t be afraid to switch things up if necessary.

5. Think about today and tomorrow.

Kick off budgeting with short-term goals like paying your credit card minimums or saving for a new car.

But don’t forget far-off goals and life events too. If you were to pass away, some of your everyday expenses stick around, like student loan debt and mortgage payments. You need to make sure your loved ones won’t be left without the cash needed to cover these costs. Getting life insurance is a good way to do this. This coverage, which insurers offer as part of term or whole-life policies, can cover some of your expenses and spare your family from having to pay out of pocket.
